Activities for Families in Kitzbühel
The Best Things to Do in Summer
Planning a family holiday in Kitzbühel, Austria? From mountain biking and alpine adventures to swimming in mountain lakes, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors together. Here are some of our favourite family activities in Kitzbühel and the surrounding Tyrolean Alps.
Kitzbühel might be famous for its skiing, but summer is just as special. The mountains turn green, the lakes warm up, and the region becomes a playground for families who love spending time outdoors.
Whether you're travelling with young children or adventurous teenagers, there's something for everyone. And the best part? You don't need to be an experienced mountaineer or cyclist to enjoy it.
1. Explore Kitzbühel by Bike
One of the best ways to discover Kitzbühel as a family is on two wheels.
The region has a great network of cycle paths, forest roads and mountain bike trails, with options for different ages and abilities.
For families looking for a relaxed adventure, an e-bike ride through the mountains is a fantastic option. Explore alpine valleys, stop at a traditional mountain hut for lunch and enjoy the scenery together.
If your children are keen to try mountain biking, Kitzbühel also has dedicated practice areas and trails where they can build their confidence.
Our tip: Start with a half-day ride, particularly if you're travelling with younger children. It leaves plenty of time to enjoy the afternoon without everyone getting too tired.
2. Try the 360 Flow Trails
For families with children who already enjoy riding, the 360 Flow Trails in Kitzbühel and Kirchberg offer an exciting introduction to mountain biking.
The MTB Family Area Streiteck is a great place to start, with practice lines, banked corners and a conveyor lift that makes repeating runs easy.
Once everyone feels comfortable with the basics, the Sonnenrast Trail provides the next step, with flowing corners and fun features.
More experienced families can explore longer trails, but it's important to choose routes that match everyone's ability. The blue trails are a step up from the forest paths and require good basic skills.
Our tip: Spend time practising braking, balance and cornering before heading onto the mountain trails. A little confidence goes a long way.
3. Swim at Schwarzsee Lake
On a warm summer's day, it's hard to beat an afternoon at Schwarzsee.
Located just outside Kitzbühel, this beautiful lake is surrounded by mountains and offers a fantastic place to swim, relax and spend time together.
There's space to enjoy the sunshine, take a break from the bikes and cool off after a morning in the mountains.
Our tip: Combine a morning cycling adventure with an afternoon at the lake for a great family day out. Whilst Kitzbühel is very safe, it's still a good idea to lock your bikes up whilst swimming.
4. Discover the Mountains on a Family Hike
You don't have to tackle a challenging summit to enjoy hiking in Kitzbühel.
The surrounding mountains offer a variety of walking routes, from gentle alpine paths to longer adventures for older children.
Taking a gondola into the mountains is a great way to experience the alpine scenery without a long climb. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views, explore the trails and stop for lunch at a mountain restaurant.
Our tip: Choose a route with a mountain hut along the way. A Kaiserschmarrn stop is often the highlight for younger hikers! Along the Sommer Streif Erlebnis, the Hahnenkammstuberl and Berghaus Tirol restaurants work well for families.
5. Visit Wildpark Aurach
Just a short drive from Kitzbühel, Wildpark Aurach is a popular family outing.
Set in a beautiful mountain landscape, the wildlife park is home to a variety of alpine and other animals, offering children the opportunity to see wildlife up close.
It's a lovely change of pace from biking or hiking, especially for families with younger children.
Allow plenty of time to explore and enjoy the surroundings.
6. Discover the Kitzbüheler Horn – An Iconic Summit
While the Hahnenkamm gets much of the attention, the Kitzbüheler Horn on the opposite side of town is a fantastic family adventure.
Take the Gipfelbahn up towards the summit at 1,996 metres, where you'll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Alps.
For curious young explorers, the Karstweg is a fascinating walk through the mountain's geological history, with unusual rock formations and insights into how this alpine landscape was formed.
Our tip: Explore the Karstweg before stopping at one of the mountain restaurants for a well-earned break. It's a great way to combine a little learning, fresh mountain air and an unforgettable summit experience.
7. Enjoy a Family Adventure in Kirchberg
One of the best family bike rides from Kitzbühel takes you along the cycle path to neighbouring Kirchberg and into the beautiful Aschau Valley.
The route from Kitzbühel to Kirchberg follows a dedicated cycle path, making it a great place for children to get comfortable riding e-bikes before heading further into the mountains.
Beyond Kirchberg, the route continues towards Aschau along a peaceful riverside cycle path, surrounded by alpine meadows and stunning views of the Großer Rettenstein.
With plenty of opportunities to stop, explore and enjoy the scenery, it's a fantastic family adventure away from the busier mountain trails.
Our tip: Take your time on the ride to Aschau and plan a stop at one of the traditional huts. It's a great introduction to e-biking and a chance to discover a quieter side of the Kitzbühel Alps.
